7/17: The History of Bentley Robe Company

A great look into the history of Bentley Robes: Submitted by owner, Robin Trent.

The Bentley Robe Company, LLC – Manufacturing in the City of Philadelphia Since 1950

In 1950, the late Reverend Dr. William L. Bentley established the Bentley Garment Factory in the basement of Emanuel Institutional Baptist Church. The factory manufactured and sold ecclesiastical garments in the worldwide market place. The company is one of America’s oldest Black owned and operated manufacturers of custom designed clergy attire. But, more importantly, jobs were created for Philadelphia citizens regardless of their religious affiliation.

Dr Bentley worked closely with the late Dr. Leon Sullivan (founder of the Opportunities Industrialization Center – OIC) to establish businesses and projects for the improvement of socio-economic conditions in local Philadelphia communities. Sixty-three years later, the Bentley Robe Company now located at 5604 Germantown Avenue (Philadelphia, PA 19144) continues the tradition of supporting the Philadelphia community. This is made possible by the ongoing support of manufacturing by ecumenical groups in the City of Philadelphia and country. The respect, unity and friendship between religious groups strengthen the economic and social fabric of the City by generating a connectedness between residents and business. Thus, the Bentley Robe Company expresses it gratitude and thanks to the following ecumenical groups.
