Located in southwest Philadelphia, CoverSports USA is a division of Humphrys Manufacturing, a textile company that has been making protective covers since 1874. Covers at a range of scales: athletic field coverss, also banners and signs, plastic flexible fencing material, and even gym mats are manufactured in their 160,000 square foot, one-story factory. They have a huge stock of different sorts of fabrics and vinyl of virtually any weight and color.
As most manufacturers we’ve visited, Humphrys prides itself themselves in quality control, and the capacity to customize products to keep up with market changes and demands. The business was started 135 years ago as a company that made covers for horse-drawn wagons. At a later point in time the Humphry brothers split the business; one company focused on flags and banners, and the this one that has evolved into CoverSports. Current owner Ron Nissenbaum explains that his father bought the business from R.A. Humphry along with many others during the 1940s.
When they first bought the business, they used a variety of canvas materials and Humphreys continued to specialize in artist canvases for many years. They take pride in the canvases for artist Isaiah Zagar, best known for his mosaic murals on South Street and throughout the city. Some of his works on canvas were, given as gifts to Humphrys and they are hanging in their offices. Today, Humphrys business is expanding as they tap into a growing market for coverings used in for athletics and recreation.
